Monochrome saturated the runways at World MasterCard Fashion Week so it came as no surprise when FASHION Magazine recently asked Style Panel experts about the trend:
Monochrome has been trending since last fall -
Aside from wearing all black, what are your tips for pulling this look off?
For some reason, my initial thoughts on monochrome go straight to the 90′s – power suits in bold colours, shoulder pads, feathered hair and everything matching right down to the nail polish. I know there are more recent takes on the trend, but Designing Women always comes to mind…
Steer clear of the shoulder pads and remember that monochrome doesn’t have to mean one solid colour, in the same fabric with matching accessories – outfits can include different shades within the same colour family. It’s certainly easier to pull off the monochrome trend with all black or white ensembles and I love a dress in a solid colour as much as the next girl, but I decided to tackle this challenge a little differently…
Okay, so it’s not 100% monochrome, but it’s close! I paired a bright pink pleated skirt with a soft pink blazer for a fresh and feminine look. Both pinks compliment each other and I broke it up with a graphic tee and some classic black and gold accessories.
Blazer: Jacob, Skirt: M for Mendocino, T-Shirt: Dynamite, Shoes: Aldo, Necklace: Minling Pan Studio, Handbag: Rebecca Minkoff, Sunglasses: Joe Fresh
If you’re not sure about the monochrome trend, try different shades of the same colour or break up the uniformity with contrasting textures. You can also break up the monotony with prints in the same colour family – check out my blazer styled with floral jeans and various pink accessories!
I’m loving pastel monochrome for spring, so I don’t think I’m done experimenting with this pretty pink blazer yet! Find a colour you love and play with different shades, textures and prints for a monochromatic look that’s truly your own!
Leave me a comment and tell me how you’d wear the trend and follow me on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for daily fashion inspiration.
